Shallots

The shortest day, December 22nd, is traditionally the time for planting shallots direct into the vegetable plot. However, with the harsh weather we had last month many of us will be late getting them in. But now is the ideal time to plant them out or start them off in pots in the greenhouse.

These are Hative de Niort and Golden Gourmet, two popular varieties, started in 3″ pots. This will give them a good start ahead of planting out sometime in March.

Are there any particular varieties you like to grow? If you have any growing tips to share please leave a comment.

These are excellent varieties for showing but don’t forget shallots make the best pickled onions and any old sort will do, no matter what shape. For this you can save some of the best of your crop from year to year so you don’t have to buy new for planting.

Hi Darren, I have a few Hative De Niort, the rest are the better Golden Gourmet saved from last year. Hopefully they’ll do well, I have root growth but no shoots yet.
